FAQs about hotels in Catania

A Perfect Combination of Ancient and Modern

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.

On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. The Elephant Fountain is the city’s symbol and the entrance to the main shopping area. Surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, Piazza del Duomo is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals.

Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

With the busiest airport in Sicily, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Catania is easily accessible by numerous European destinations like Munich, Rome and London. You can stay in one of the Catania hotels, guest houses or hostels Booking.com offers.

I've dined at Al Vicolo Pizza&Vino and sampled other restaurants, but none compare to Al Vicolo—it's truly the best! As for Catania, it's not a city I'd recommend visiting. It's incredibly crowded, impoverished, and the air quality leaves much to be desired. Getting around isn't easy either. However, if you venture to Siracusa or any nearby area, you'll gain a completely different perspective on Sicily.

The main reason for staying was to visit Mount Etna and to look around Catania as part of a trip that took in Palermo, Catania and Taormina. It was only 24 hours but our accommodation at B&B La Cupola certainly made the journey worthwhile. The city was a safe environment to walk around and the food was excellent. Do consider using the rail system as it worked well for us transferring from West to East.

I loved the historic architecture around Via Etnea where I was staying at Etna Suites Group. The food options were everywhere, shopping at all financial levels, and the city was made for pedestrians first and cars second. Don't get a car! You can walk everywhere you want to go and the walk will be exciting and fun. I never felt scared or worried about my safety day or night. I got a tour of Etna that picked me up from my hotel and drove me all the way up and dropped me back off where I started. Awesome awesome city.

It is not just a tourist destination but still a real place. Beautiful architecture with a bit of grit. Nice people. Plenty to explore. Good day trip capabilities and public transportation. Affordable food choices. Liked Insigne Cafe and Trattoria da Nuccio. Excellent price value ratio. Not a place for beach time. Great little botanical garden and museum of contemporary art.

    Catania surprised me.

Catania surprised me. While people were indifferent, they weren’t rude, which was nice. Touristy sites were easy to get to by walking. It seems a really walkable city, from the train station to the sites. Cars were patient and obeyed pedestrian crossings etc and stopped to let people cross the road when there wasn’t any crossing! The street art is a bonus. I loved the well advertised touristy sites and there were no long queues, and they were cheaper to get into than a lot of Italy’s sites.

I like mostly the food and the prices of some restaurants, but sometimes the service charge is too much. I found it very easy to use the public transport in catantia and to go to other places like Taormina, Castelmola, centro sicilia and Sicilia outlet etc, etc.

Walked to the beach across the road..the city of Catania needs to do a better job at keeping the beaches clean from trash, I was certainly disappointed in the trash at the beach and the lack of upkeep of those beautiful beaches, an opportunity that is being missed for Catania......but the site was beautiful and close to the airport and jumping off spot for our stay in Sicily and travels throughout Sicily.

Spotlessly clean, gorgeous new bathroom, generous extras provided (including toothbrush and toothpaste). We stayed in the family room, which is very comfortable and has a little balcony with table and chairs. Great location two minutes from Piazza del Duomo. Of course we got the warmest welcome ever in Catania at our apartman. The flat was absolutly luxury with air-conditioning, kitchen tools, kind interior, tidiness, charming terrace and guidelines to the city. The owners every day helped us with nice tips. Late night check-in is totally not a problem, the host is reliable and fast to answer or react to any question. The Sicily Coast is located just 15 min walk from the beach, and same 15 min walk to Castello Ursino/the city center/shopping street with great variety of restaurants. Big supermarket Lidl just on the half way to the beach. The view to Catania Harbor opens directly from the balcony.

We couldn’t believe that we found a hotel a 5 minute walk from the Catania airport: which was perfect for catching an early morning flight, eliminating the stress of trying to make it to the airport in time from Catania or Taormina. The bed was comfortable and any noise from planes went unnoticed. Don’t be expecting great views. There are car parks in the area.
