Geel began as a pilgrimage place for those with mental illness in their families. It was a kind place of healing and the Legend of St. Dimpna brought pilgrims to the town, which is now a thriving and charming city of 40,000 people. For those interested in care for those with autism, mental illness, and Alzheimer’s, they provide an excellent public model of care—-all beginning with the kindness of the nuns in the 11th century! The Church of St. Dimpna is a must-see! We arranged a tour by asking at the very excellent Hospital Museum nearby. Everyone here was so helpful and kind.

Small friendly town with impressive main square.
Small friendly town with impressive main square. Of great interest regarding it’s history in World War 2 as a centre of force fighting in September. Local people very friendly and hospitable. Lots of super restaurants and coffee shops.
