Kings Head by Chef & Brewer Collection, hotel in Mickley

Overlooking the Market Square in the small town of Masham, this charming inn is set within a fine Georgian building of tremendous character, built in the second half of the 18th century.

The Kings Head is a lovely traditional pub but it is just that - a pub. The bar is comfortable, traditional with a really nice atmosphere and the beer can't fail with two excellent breweries in the town! The room we had was big, high ceiling and had two tall sash windows looking out over the market square - and the windows open, which is always a bonus! The bathroom was fine - clean and with plenty hot water. The staff was friendly and obliging and they all worked their little socks off!

What a wonderful place to stay. Room was large and bed comfy , staff cant do enough for you spa is free to use and no need to book, pool was great also able to get a drink brought to you whilst in the spa a really nice touch. Food in the Hotel was beautiful and reasonable for a 5 star hotel , breakfast expensive at £35 per person not worth it. Food in the on site bar/restaurant was also very good and not expensive given the location. Grounds fantastic we walked over 6 miles through them all it was amazing

The Woodman Inn, hotel in Mickley

Situated in Bedale, 13 km from Lightwater Valley Theme Park, The Woodman Inn features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

We had a ground floor room in an annexe at the rear of the pub. Good size clean room but bed too hard for our taste so not a good nights sleep for us. Breakfast at 9am was a bit restrictive for us. But overall a reasonable good stay.

You really need a car to get around, but I'd definitely recommend the Staveley Arms in the next village from Mickley, North Stainley, for food. Ripon is a £15 taxi ride away and is well worth a visit and the fantastic Fountains Abbey is close by, too. If any runners are reading this, I'd highly recommend the Fountains Abbey parkrun at 9am every Saturday morning.

We did not have time to explore the village and it’s surrounds, as we had other trips planned. It is a small rural residential area, with a lovely church. No pub or shop, but these can be found in adjacent villages. We travelled to the Blue Lion in East Witton, and the Staveley Arms in North Stainley and had excellent meals in both. We also visited Hackfall and the Himalayan Gardens, and found both of them to well worth a visit for their wonderful gardens / scenery and the opportunity for a 2-3 mile (easy / moderate) walk to enjoy the venues.

Mickley itself is small and quiet but delightful - very different from our home location - far away from the hubbub. It was a good spot for visiting the Yorkshire Dales or the N York Moors if you want to travel a little further.
