The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic.
The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.

Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city. If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places. Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.

The staff is incredible, the atmosphere at the place is fantastic, thanks to the shared dinner offered almost every night. The value you get for breakfast+dinner+a twin bed in a super nice room is kinda ridiculous if I'm honest. Even the fact that it's 15 minute walk from the station is outweighed in my opinion by the fact that you get to pass by the extremely nice castle park on the way. Nice that they gave out bath salts to use in the bathtub. The staff was friendly and helped in sending our luggage forward. The hotel is also close to the station and there is also a supermarket nearby in the Yamako building. Great that you can connect to Netflix on your own account on the TV.

It's at the train station (literally), but the rooms were tranquil, with a nice view of the city and mountains. The reception hall is magnificent. The location couldn't be any better. My room was small but not tiny, and I felt that I had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. For sure the best place for any Yamagata travellers!

As a solo traveller or couple, if you are looking for a social/local experience with long nights of talking and sharing with the other guests, this is the perfect place.
