Middlebury is a small town in the Amish part of Northern Indiana. Essenhaus Inn and Conference center is adjacent to a large restaurant and gift shop. There are several very nice gift shops on the same property, as well as a couple of paths that are accessible from the hotel that accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, and even an Amish horse and buggy ride. One even has a small, covered bridge that some local boys were fishing from.
Since we only stayed one night, we did not experience much in the area, but did go over to see Krider's World's Fair Garden, about 5-10 minutes from the hotel, and the grounds were lovely and rustic.
The Amish town of Shipshewana is only a few minutes' drive from Middlebury, and it has lots of amenities and shops. There are several hotels, and even a hotel with a dinner theater. The town also has a weekly flea market.
If you are looking for a quiet, clean, quaint get-away, the Middlebury area might just be the place for you!

Very beautiful area, lots of horses and buggys for extra ambience Essenhaus property is very, very nice. We visited a bar called Wedgewood Pub and didn't care for that. Way too loud and although the boneless wings were very good, the sauce (garlic parmesan) was terrible.

Middlebury is the gateway to northern Indiana's Amish region, offering modern amenities in a quaint setting. Amish craftsmen and women work in the area's large recreational vehicle industry, yet commute to and from their jobs by horse-drawn buggy or on bicycles. The quiet streets are safe and pleasant to walk, the people are friendly, and the pace is measured.

Northridge pizza my burger wAs amazing husband had pizza grinder homemade bread Husband ate the llama licious ice cream and it was fabulousThe people in town are very sweet and will talk to you and start a conversation with you anytime and pretty much everyone offers to give advice on where to go it’s like you step back in time it’s absolutely wonderful
I loved the beauty of the Essenhaus' interior and the decor. Everything is well matched and the colors are restful. I love the various shades of blue even though blue is not my favorite color! There was not one speck of dust on the furniture or the floor and no cobwebs! The entire facility, including our room, was spick-and-span! I always check out every little detail and found no flaws!! I give you an A+++!!!
Breakfast was great. The hotel was clean and the staff was very nice. The shops had a lot to offer. The restaurant was very busy as usual, and the food was good. We also didn't have to wait at all because the front desk staff can make you a reservation. The free cookies and coffee/hot chocolate were a nice little bonus. The grounds are gorgeous and very well maintained. We had a lovely time.
I love that this is an opening Christian facility with no alcohol or smoking. The rooms were beautifully decorated and large. It was not overcrowded, and so clean! The boys loved the pool area and game room. Was refreshing to find a hotel that has zero tolerance for drug use. If you go to Elkhart, Goshen, South Bend etc this is not the case.
The grounds and landscaping are absolutely beautiful. The decor is fitting to the area. Every area was very clean. The balcony is a wonderful amenity. The breakfast exceeded expectations - gravy and egg casserole were very good & better than you'd find at other hotel breakfasts. Would definitely stay here again!
The breakfast was typical for a hotel serving breakfast. One exception - there was no oatmeal served. The location is good. Hotel had very dated decor, research indicates 1970 sor 1980s. The buffet at the inn associated with the hotel was plentiful and the fish was very good.
There was a good assortment of breakfast items to choose from. The woman in charge of breakfast was on top of everything (restocking and cleaning). Unlike most hotels, the comforter on the bed was clean and unused. It was also nice to have a microwave and coffee pot in the room.
We LOVED this location. The hotel is clean, quiet, and peaceful. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the common area is fantastic, filled with games to play. The breakfast was generous, and the onsite restaurant is a must for dinner.
The location and view were great. The area was very quiet and peaceful, definitely not something you ever get at a hotel. The host was always prompt to respond and extremely kind and helpful. Perfect little getaway place.
Overall the Hotel and facilities were very clean. My room had a balcony with it that overlooked the pond and was very peaceful. Wish we could’ve stayed longer.
