From entrance to exit, it is only a one-way street, so you can't exactly go out from the way you come in. They do have souvenir shops inside with average price. It is a long walk from entrance to exit with lots of seating area. From the exit, the nearest metro station will be at least 1,5km away. I think it's best for you to invest in Sightseeing bus for that day for convenience.

You really need to reserve tickets online in advance.
You really need to reserve tickets online in advance. The official website to do this is of course only in Chinese; you need to use online travel service sites (ctrip or similar) if you are the average western tourist; it works just by giving them online your passport nr and pay by creditcard. Do not expect a confirmation reference number or anything like that: they apparently "register" your passport nr in the entrance ticketing system and you just go with the crowd to arrive to the gate and then show your passport to the guards. Surprisingly - considering the colossal crowds - it does work.
There ARE possibly some tickets left for onsite purchase that you COULD buy at the ticketing counter on the day in the morning but A. you need to FIND that counter. Again, colossal crowds and immense spaces with practically zero information signalled in English... and B. they may run out in a few minutes after opening. (by the time you make your way through to the ticket counters those few tickets would be swapped up by the better informed/ faster local tourists)

I highly suggest to book the visit in advance.
I highly suggest to book the visit in advance. The place is really crowded and tickets go sold out really fast. It's tricky because you cannot book it on the official website more than 10 days in advance and it always sold out 2 days before. Also you need some specific information such as Chinese phone number (you might use the hotel one) and to book in on a computer not on a phone. I would suggest buying the ticket in experiences websites, you will probably pay a little bit more but you can ensure the entrance.

In summer when we visited it was extremely busy and hot.
In summer when we visited it was extremely busy and hot. The automatic tour guide machines don’t work so well. Perhaps better experienced with a tour guide who can get you ahead of the crowds and explain everything

Amazing place!
Amazing place!
Book online, and check the treasures and the clocks exhibitions. They're worth the extra time. If you want to explore this place thoroughly or without a hurry, prepare to spend 4 hours +.
To book online by yourself you need a Chinese phone number, your passport number and a computer. The online booking system does not work with mobiles or tablets.
If you can, avoid the weekend due to the number of visitors. If it's sunny, use sunblock.
Bring an empty backpack in case you want to buy special items from the shops inside the palace. Most of them are by the North exit.
Save some energy at the end if you want to go to the park in the north of the palace, to see some panoramic views of the city and the palace.

Located in Beijing Hutong between 2 metro stations (within walking distance). Very near to Wangfujing shopping street and food! Walkable distance to Forbidden City as well (but about 20mins walk). Basic room with necessary amenities, but i love the shared pantry area which gives a homely vibe. Hotel is more like a youth hostel vibe, friendly staffs who will help to give recommendations on food and places on interest.
very nice hotel well placed inside Beijing forbidden city disctrict.
nice and helpful staff, fluent in english and able to help on various requests (ticketing to shows, food requests, early breakfast,...)
The hotel was clean and had a shuttle bus to take you to and from the airport every 30 mins. You can go to the city from the airport, it takes 5 mins from the hotel to the airport by the shuttle bus and then there you can take metro or bus if you are on a budget to each the city. It takes 30 mins by bus and metro to reach the Heaven;s palace near the forbidden city.
The stuff was very friendly and always trying to help, they have a small translator decide to help with communication. The service was at high level.
The Orchid's location is fantastic, in the middle of Beijing's hutongs (great area to walk around and get lost in) and close to the drum & bell tower, nanluoguxiang and even the forbidden city is only a 10 minute bicycle ride away. The hotel itself is lovely, it's like staying in an tiny old Chinese village. Staff is wonderful too, very helpful and friendly. As for places to eat around the hotel - try Mr Shi dumplings in the same street as the hotel, highly recommended!
The hotel was in one of the 'hutong' zones with original hutong buildings rather than the characterless high rise blocks of flats. Very friendly staff and close to lots of very good restaurants with reasonable priced menus. Close to the Beijing tourist sites eg Forbidden City
The staff at reception were so lovely and accommodating. They went above and beyond to help (special shout out to Hawwa). The hotel also organised many tours such as the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
The location is very central ( station: Zhangzizhonglu ) and it is easy to visit the many sites of Beijing by subway. Many restaurants are around the area as well.
A really great stay and I would highly recommend.
We enjoyed our fantastic stay at the Happy Dragon Hotel Beijing. The staff was quite helpful, especially the smart and active girl Hewwa, who gave us recommendations for places to see and booked the tickets for us. The location is 2 minutes walk from a metro station, making it simple to commute to major sites. If you intend to visit the forbidden city, please book your tickets at least a week in advance. You can also contact the hotel for additional assistance with the booking and recommendations.
We would like to start by thanking the gentleman in the front desk for their excellent customer support. Any questions we had about Beijing specifically, and China in general, they had proper answers. Their American English helped of course the process of interaction. Otherwise, if you are looking for a cozy Chinese style hotel in the middle of the Hotungs, this is your place. Approximately 10 minutes walking distance to the closest metro station, and walking distance to The Tian’anmen Square and the forbidden city.
This is a hotel with very Chinese characteristics and Beijing characteristics, and it is very close to the Forbidden City. We and the kids thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The staff were also very friendly to us and the kids. I hope to stay in this hotel again next time I have a chance to go to Beijing.
I have stayed 5 night in this hotel and completely enjoyed it. The room was very spacious, very clean and very nicely decorated with all the amenities you may need. Paul from reception and all the team were very helpful.
The hotel has a very good location, next to line 8 subway and walking distance to The Forbidden City. Beijing is very nice to visit. i am very happy with this trip.

The forbidden City and the Summer Palace gives you a very good idea of their rich culture
Don't use the Tours that are being offered , learn to use the subway trains are very efficient .You can get around anywhere in Beijing for 2 RMB , so traveling anywhere is very cheap .You only need to pay for your entrance fees wherever you go . The forbidden City and the Summer Palace gives you a very good idea of their rich culture .

The Forbidden City is amazing (I paid for the audio guide), and explains a lot about the life and times of the emperors who lived there
The main places to see are easily accessible and not expensive. The Forbidden City is amazing (I paid for the audio guide), and explains a lot about the life and times of the emperors who lived there. Walking around the hutongs gives you the opportunity to see a part of the city that is still as it has been for many years, so see them before they disappear!. Of course a day trip to the Wall will help you appreciate how the Chinese tried to keep marauders and invaders out of their territory - quite an amazing piece of civil engineering even though it didn't in the end prevent Genghis Khan from entering the kingdom.

Third day of holidays 2014 (peak time of course is the first) Forbidden City count for a day was 140 000 people
You cannot!!! Unless it is deep winter and snow has fallen... But do yourself a favor - do not travel to Beijing for sightseeing on the first week of October (National Holidays). Third day of holidays 2014 (peak time of course is the first) Forbidden City count for a day was 140 000 people!!! Weather wise best is September...
